Purpose

Meeting of Minds is a closing event of the international art exhibition Art in Motion (21.6 - 14.9.2003,  Bos van Ypeij, Tytsjerk, the Netherlands). The symposium brings together scholars and creators in the arts and in technology for the purpose of enriching study and practice in both fields.

The symposium will feature technical projects in relation to kinetic art:

•The Institute of Technology, Department of Engineering of the NHL shows prototypes developed for trade and industry which may be also useful for kinetic artists, such as a “anti swing control”, a “rotating display”, an “ultrasonic weatherstation” and  a “moving sound” - project.

•De Kinetic Art Organization exhibits work from kinetic artists in which new or interesting technology are involved.

•Two exhibitors of Art in Motion will contribute to the Meeting of Minds. The technical backgrounds of the art work Aquanimations from Rinus Roelofs will be further analyzed (Aquanimations is a coproduction between the artist, the Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden - Institute of Technology, Department of Engineering -, the TechnologyCentre of the Nothern Netherlands and the company Hoekstra Suwâld).  Rinus Roelofs will also give a lecture about digital sculpture. Artist Hanshan Roebers shows a prototype of a huge art work that runs a water circuit on  wind- and solar energy.

The presentations will be exposed as “stands” in the big hall of the NHL and can be visited or explored by the participants in order to the starting-point of Meeting of Minds, viz. bringing arts and technology together.

Follow up

The symposium will be taped on video.  The videotape can be ordered shortly after the symposium.

In advance artists can propose technical problems that arise by the designing or construction of kinetic prototypes. After the symposium the Institute of Technology, Department of Engineering will investigate the possibilities to solve one or more of these problems as a co-operation project. The proposals for further research can be send to Mr Woud van Woudenberg, NHL, Head of the Institute of Technology, Department of Engineering,  Tesselschadestraat 12, 8913 HB Leeuwarden ( E-mail:  vanwoudenberg@nhl.nl ).
